Cultural Dilemma's
A cultural dilemma I have had was when I was younger where I brought food to an invitation to eat. So when I was younger I used to be very active through out the day. As a result of that I used to get very hungry and eat a lot. At home I wasn't allowed to enter the kitchen before everyone else had made their plate. So I used to buy food with my allowance whenever I could, so I didn't get hungry. When I got invited to sleep over at a friend's house, I thought if I went there without my own food they wouldn't have enough to accommodate me. So I brought my own food to the sleep over, and I did not share it. This did not sit right with the people I went over too. It was seen as disrespectful, as me telling them they are not able to buy enough food for a guest they invited to their home.
How will we be able to contribute to Dutch society during/after our studies?
During my studies here I am contributing to Dutch society by being involved in the community. I help coach a kids basketball team, I also play basketball myself. I also contribute to the Dutch society by living here, shopping here, and paying taxes. This contributes to the Dutch economy. As an international student I am contributing the diversity in the Netherlands. After my studies I will be able to contribute on a much larger scale, as I will have more skills, knowledge and resources to share. I will be able to donate to charities, hopefully be in a position to still have an influence on people through sports.
Why is it important to study ICC?
We are at the beginning of our study path in International Sport Management (ISPM), an international bachelor's degree, which implies being able to behave in an international and dynamic learning environment. Through the study of the ICC course we'll be able to communicate in an efficient way with people from other countries, who have different cultures, values and backgrounds.
What is the value of international programs/students?
International programs/students have many advantages to the city/country that offers them. Offering international programs attracts international students. International students can become part of a international network which would include the locals of that area. With an influx of internationals comes a sharing of each others cultures and ideas, this exposure to each others cultures brings awareness to cultural differences and teaches us how we can better communicate and get along with one another. By joining an international program we are getting ready to work in a international environment. This teaches us to think globally. By this we mean thinking about working and doing business on a global scale. Doing business on a global scale, will require us to acquire different language skills other than the one we grew up speaking at home
